Nowadays, it is common for parents to be sourcing out tuition for their children. According to a 2015 Straits Times editorial, 70% of parents send their children for home tuition. Private tuition is paid for by 8 out of 10 primary school pupils and 6 out of 10 secondary school students.

Parents want the best for their children, notably when it comes down to education. Singapore has a pristine education system, also providing a variety of enrichment and remedial programs to fulfill the requirements of pupils. While the local education system is stellar and produces quality pupils, industry insiders believe that the quality of school teachers varies greatly. Teachers, who are already overburdened with managing a class of 30, have a slew of administrative tasks to complete. And they sometimes expect parents to fill in for them when they are unable to.

When parents, who are filled with chores and work responsibilities, along with schools who are unable to bridge the knowledge gap of the child, tuition comes into place. Hence, it is imperative that the tutors ensure the child does not fall behind in academics.

Home tutors ensure that your child stays on track with his or her curriculum, and in some cases, they even give the child a head start. When opposed to a classroom atmosphere when friends are present, the situation at home is more comfortable, with few to no disturbances or interruptions. The tutor gives your kid his or her undivided attention and, at times, academic challenges that can enliven and revitalize learning.

However, not all tutors provide quality services, hence finding tutors who positively impact rather than impede may be a difficult process. Most parents look for ex-teachers or full-time tutors who are well-versed in the topic and syllabus. They frequently charge up to a hefty price.

So, is home tuition beneficial for your child? It is critical to consider these factors before making the decision to hire a tutor. Home tuition does provide full attention to your child, ensuring that they are not falling behind in their studies, and even preparing them for major examinations such as PSLE or 'O' Levels. However, keep your child's preferences in mind. We may overlook the importance of the unique individual who holds distinct talents and flaws, in our eagerness to mold our children into better copies of ourselves.
